Govt compromises Manipur's land to please Myanmar: Oppn

Demanding immediate halt of the ongoing border fencing work at the Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar border, opposition parties in Manipur Monday alleged chief minister O Ibobi Singh and his government of compromising state's territory to please Myanmar government.


Leaders of the opposition parties taking part in a protest-cum-meeting held at Imphal's Keishampat expressed fear that large area of Manipur will be included in Myanmar territory unreasonably due to the fencing.


"Since the issue is related with losing of Manipur's land, works on fencing along the border should be immediately stopped keeping in view the sentiments of the people of the state," secretary of CPI Manipur State Council Dr M Nara said, speaking at the meeting.


He urged the state government to press the Union government for a re-survey of the border.

President of the Manipur People's Party (MPP) accused Manipur government of raping the land, by giving it away to the neigbouring country for fear of affecting to the bilateral relationship between India and Mynmar.


He further alleged Ibobi government of taking Rs 5.8 lakhs from the central government as compensation of the lost territories, instead of protecting it. Sovakiran, further demanded that O Ibobi should be put behind bar for raping Manipur's land.


General secretary of Naga Peoples' Front (NPF) while speaking at the meeting criticized the Congress government in Manipur saying that it was trying to woo public by distributing rice and kerosene at cheaper price instead of taking care of its land.


Leaders and members of 11 opposition political parties including BJP, CPI, CPI-M, MPP, NPF and JD-U took part in the protest-cum-meeting held at Imphal's Keishampat which commenced from around 2 pm and concluded at 4.30 pm.


Earlier, the opposition political parties planned a mass rally in Imphal to register a strong demand on immediate halt of the border fencing until a final settlement to the disputed border areas arrive.


On the other hand, president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), MLA L Ibomcha has questioned whether India was following a foreign policy aimed at persuading Myanmar government to flush out Manipur rebels taking shelter in their territory in exchange for land of the state.
