Local filmmaker taking first feature to Cannes Film Festival

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A local filmmaker was so inspired by orphans living in Myanmar monasteries, he made a film about them.

"The kids are amazing," said filmmaker, Brian Perkins.

Those children's stories are captured in his film, "Golden Kingdom."

It all started with a visit to Myanmar in 2012. He said in the monasteries, "it's like a society of kids, and they're monks and they essentially just care for themselves."

Perkins is originally from Clatskanie. Now, he may earn international recognition with his first feature film as he attends the Cannes Film Festival in May.

He said he just learned "Golden Kingdom" will be screened at the major movie event.

"It's going to have its market premier, and so people from all over the world, distributors, are going to have a chance to see the film," he said.

Perkins said he's hopeful someone will pick it up and eventually audiences everywhere will enjoy it.
