The family of a Burmese migrant worker killed in a boiler explosion at a cloth-dying factory in Samut Prakan, Thailand on August 17th will be compensated 100,000 baht, or 3 million kyat,

according to U Thein Naing, labor attaché for the Burmese Embassy in Thailand.

"They have promised to provide 100,000 baht compensation for the death [of Burmese migrant worker] from the factory[in which the] boiler blew up. They have told us they will also provide 11,873 baht for social welfare insurance," said U Thein Naing.

On August 17th, the boiler exploded at a Wongpasit Printing Co. Ltd. operated cloth-dying factor on Tai Ban Rd in Samut Prakan's Muang District, due to overheating. A majority of the factory's workers come from Burma. The explosion resulted in the injury of 18 Burmese workers and four Thai workers, as well as the death of Burmese worker Ma Aye Khaing, who died on August 19th due to injuries from the blast.

According to U Kyaw Thaung, director of the Myanmar Association in Thailand (MAT), a workers' rights group which aims to aid Burmese migrants working in Thailand, the amount of compensation the factory is to provide the victim's family is still small.

"According to Thai labor law, 100,000 baht will be provided as compensation to the victim, even [if] a finger of him or her is cut off at the workplace. We used to help the victims'families to receive about 600,000 baht as compensation for victims [who have] died by getting hit by a car or died at the workplace. But now, it is only 100,000 baht, so it is not much," said U Kyaw Thaung.

U Kyat Thaung continues that the 100,000 baht compensation for the death of Ma Aye Khaing is not that much, and it does not even match Thai law.

The compensation will be transferred to the parents of victim Ma Aye Khaing, according to U Thein Naing.

"We are still contacting the victim's family to provide compensation," said U Thein Naing, "We actually got contact [with the family], but have to check whether the household document is correct or not."

Burma's Labor Ministry will also provide 5,000 baht each to two Burmese migrant workers who sustained serious injuries, 3,000 baht each to four Burmese workers in less serious condition, and 2,000 baht each to other injured workers, according to a report from the Burmese Embassy's Labor attaché in Thailand, submitted to the Labor Direction Department in Naypyidaw on August 17th.
