At the age of 90, and nowadays not so light on her feet, Patricia Knatchbull,
the Countess Mountbatten of Burma, apologises that her two-acre garden isn't
up to much; she's down to one (part-time) gardener at her home near Ashford,
Kent. Pots of colourful annuals crowd cheerfully around the entrance, but
otherwise the garden is largely laid to lawn.There are, however, some
impressive trees and, in a far border along a red-brick wall, 'Lord Louis'
and 'Mountbatten' roses, named after her father, the last viceroy of India,
from whom she inherited her title by special retainer.



Lady Mountbatten may have cut back on her charity commitments, as well as her
flower beds, but one of the positions she has kept is as president of the
local branch of the British Legion. She is a great supporter of their work:
"They really do look after anybody who has had service connections,
