DKBA troops surround police station in Kawkareik

DKBA troops surround police station in Kawkareik

Some 40 troops of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) surrounded the Kawkareik police station in Kayin State, Southern Myanmar, around 12.30am on August 12, according to local reports.

It is not clear exactly why the incident occurred but locals and police sources claim that it might be connected with police raids and arrests on DKBA-owned gambling dens on August 10.

"District police force raided the gambling centres and locked up them. The following day, the police force took the stuff from the centres to the police station. That's why about 40 members of DKBA came to the police station and demanded to return the seized materials. The police locked their doors and army forces took their place inside the police station. The whole city was worried yesterday but today we heard no sound," said a local from Kawkayeik.

The DKBA has denied that it had surrounded the police station by force saying they had only gone to meet the police to discuss the matter and had brought men for security purposes.

"No, we are not surrounding the police force with arms. The heads of both sides met there. We asked that matter to the information office in Kawkeyeik and teir answer was no. When both sides met, there were two captains from DKBA and they brought about 40 men for security purposes only," said an official from DKBA.

He added that he had no idea why the men went to Kawkayeik and he didn't know exactly about the incidents aforementioned on August 10. However Police Lt-Col, Min Aung from the Myanmar Police Force Headquarters told Eleven Media that the incident was connected to the police confiscation of gambling materials.

"It is not true that DKBA surrounded the Kawkayeik police force. The police force had closed two gambling shops opened illegally. Hence the DKBA came to the police station and asked for the game equipment," said Police Lt-Col Min Aung.

Following the August 12 incident, there were some movements among Karen armed groups on late that evening and on the morning of August 13 but the situation was stable by the afternoon according to a local from the border town of Myawady.
