A week after parliament approved his appointment, Kyaw Kyaw Maung was sworn in as the new governor of Myanmar's Central Bank during a parliamentary session on Thursday.
Kyaw Kyaw Maung is in his early 70s, has experience in banking and once served as the governor of the Central Bank between 1997 and 2007. He succeeded former governor Than Nyein, who was re-appointed as the vice-governor in the reshuffle.
On July 25, President Thein Sein sent a list of nominations for the top post at the bank to parliament. The President nominated Kyaw Kyaw Maung as governor and Set Aung, Than Nyein and Khin Saw Oo as vice governors. The Union Assembly approved their appointments on July 30.
Than Nyein is the former governor who took over from Kyaw Kyaw Maung in 2007. Set Aung is the deputy minister for national planning and economic development, and Khin Saw Oo is an economist and a professor at Yangon University of Economics.
Myanmar's government plans to make the Central Bank an independent body as part of the country's economic reforms. Up to now, the bank remains under the control of the Ministry of Finance.
