Lower House approves bill to protect farmers

Myanmar's Lower House of Parliament passed a bill on August 28 that aims to protect the rights of farmers.

The bill was drafted by the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Committee. Following the discussion on the bill at Upper House on August 28, it was sent back to Lower House and it was approved on the same day.

The original objectives of the bill seek to provide loans for agricultural investment, provide farming technology and inputs, attain good prices for crops and mainly protect small scale farmers.

The Upper House supplemented one point that ensures protection be given to farmers suffering natural disasters.

Soe Naing, who is Chairman of the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Committee commented that farmers associations needed to be formed in order to protect farmers from land grabbing and to promote farmers' rights.

The chairman said that the Lower House-approved bill would be sent for the President to sign on August 28.
