2 arrested for travelling to Sharjah on bogus passports

The Airport police on Tuesday night arrested two persons for allegedly travelling to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on bogus Indian passports from Pune. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the duo hail from Myanmar in Burma.

Police have identified the arrested persons as Ansari Mehboob Alam s/o Abdul Rehman Ansari (24), a resident of Sahdeva Noniya in Raxaul tehsil of East Champaran district in Bihar, and Gazi Najbul Hasan s/o Gazi Ali (23), a resident of Sumitranagar in Gopavarm tehsil of Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. The names and addresses are those mentioned on the passport seized from them, police said.

According to the police, the duo had travelled to Sharjah from Pune on Saturday night. However, the authorities at the Sharjah airport detained them suspecting genuineness of their passports. Later, the Sharjah Aviation Services deported them back to Pune. On their arrival here, they were handed over to the Bureau of Immigration (BoI) officials for further investigations.

The BoI authorities confirmed that the passports were bogus. On behalf of BoI, assistant central intelligence officer Suryakant Ram (34) lodged a complaint with the Airport police station.

Assistant police inspector P B Kolte, who is investigating the case, said, "The duo is unable to converse in Indian language. One of them understands a little bit Hindi but cannot speak the language. He has claimed that they are natives of Burma. We are looking for a language interpretor for further interrogation and will also take assistance of University of Pune and the Myanmar Embassy."

Police have charged them for offences under sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery for cheating), 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections of the Passports Act.

Police said that Ansari's passport was purportedly issued from Patna on November 26, 2009 while Gazi's passport was issued on January 20, 2010, from Hyderabad.

On Wednesday, police produced the duo before the court of Judicial Magistrate (First Class) P P Kestikar, which remanded them in police custody till September 29.
