House speaker underscores public voices and sympathy in judicial decisions

No one will point a finger at the judicial pillar if authorities from that sector listen to public voices and sympathise with their plight, says Myanmar's Upper House of Parliament speaker.
Speaker Khin Aung Myint made the comment during a parliamentary session on Friday in Nay Pyi Taw when the Parliament Bill Committee submitted a report by its investigation team.
The report pointed to a woman from Ayeyawady region who had experienced financial losses due to a court decision that ruled against her.
The constitution has given the citizens equal rights, liberty and justice and this shows the essence of the right of equality that every citizen can enjoy before the law. As the rule of law is concerned with that issue, it is necessary to act considerably in judicial affairs, said the speaker.
He said it was regrettable that Parliament had been filled with complaints about loan problems, warning against running unlicensed loan centres with high interest rates across the country. Some cases had even led to land and home seizures putting debtors in great trouble. Such problems could be seen around the country, he commented.
"When a case emerges in which the creditor is believed to be running an unlicensed loan business, judicial authorities must consider equality, fairness and justice. The case must focus on the spirit of law as prescribed in law books," said Khin Aung Myint.
He also highlighted the importance of the judicial officials to listen to public voices and sympathise with their plight.
Khin Aung Myint said the Supreme Court, as well as other high courts, needed to reform at various levels, warning them they would be held accountable if they continue to unilaterally defended their lower level organizations.
He also called on the judges to stick to the principle of ensuring the rule of law.
