Ministry offers tenders to distribute electricity to central Myanmar

The Ministry of Electric Power has invited local and foreign investors to distribute electricity to Kyaukse and Myingyan townships, in Mandalay Region, using natural gas generated power plants.

The ministry will rent Gas Engine Generators to generate power in Kyaukse region and build a Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) in Myingyan Township.

Myanmar began exporting natural gas from Shwe Natural Gas Project to China on July 1. While residents in Kyaukphyu Township and its neighbouring 13 villages in Rakhine state are now receiving electricity generated from natural gas since September 15, more townships are now demanding their share of gas-generated electricity.

Myanmar's domestic demand for electricity is rising year after year and achieving a stable supply of power is the one of the government's main challenges as it aims to attract foreign investment.

The Ministry of Electric Power will buy 150 to 200 million cubic metres a day in this in 2013 to supply electricity to the public and 500 to 600 million cubic metres of natural gas a day after 2014.
