Myanmar authorities seize 10,000 chicken hatchlings

Myanmar authorities have seized 10,000 chicken hatchlings being illegally transported into Yangon Region, according to an official from Yangon Region Government.

"The respective bottom-level departments are handling the case," said Soe Min, the livestock and agriculture minister for Yangon Region.

Officials inspected the truck carrying the poultry on its way from Mandalay to Yangon. After receiving a tip-off they seized the haul at Min Lwin Gone checkpoint in Hlegu Township of Yangon Region on August 30.

The officials say they checked out the truck as it is said to come from a bird-flu infected area. Officials from Myanmar Livestock Federation also took part in the inspection.

The truck was reportedly coming from Lashio, the largest town in northern Shan State bordering China. Authorities released an official notice in the area about importing illegal eggs due to fears of spreading the bird-flu virus of which cases have been reported in China.

And the authorities have destroyed the chicks by burying them at a place beside Yangon-Bago Highway.

The truck owner and driver who tried to transport the illegal chicks were just given a written warning asking them not to do it again by the authorities, according to official records.
