SIBU: Michael Sia Sung Dak is aiming to compete in the coming Myanmar SEA Games in December and has the potential to do so based on his sterling performance in the recent Selangor Open Athletics Championship.
The 19-year-old Bukit Jalil Sports School student achieved a distance of 55.67m in the hammer throw to take the gold medal in the meet.
Malaysia's leading hammer throw athlete, Jackie Wong gave the tournament a miss as he was preparing for his university studies in Kuala Lumpur.
"It's no doubt a mountain to climb but it is not impossible. I will continue to train hard to qualify for the SEA Games," Sia said on his ambition to hit the SEA Games qualifying mark at 60.59m.
Last year, Sia only achieved a distance of 47.58m at Pahang Sukma to win the silver medal, behind gold medalist Jackie who broke the games' record with a new distance of 55.25m.
And within a short span of time, Sia had registered a remarkable improvement and he attributed it to his Chinese coach, Du Yuan who had guided him on the use of the latest technical throwing skills.
Since he started training with Du Yuan, Sia has been hitting 54m to 55m regularly and had been pumping in five hours of training each day.
"I love the game and I am confident that I can accomplish further distance if I train hard," said Sia who took up the event only in 2011 when he was roped in by Sarawak throw events chief coach, Ling Neng Thung.
The former SMK Tong Hua student stands at 178 cm and exploded into the scene at the 2012 Sibu Open, taking the gold in the hammer throw event. His biggest achievement was winning the title in last year's Asian Schools Athletics Championship in Indonesia when he hurled the 5kg hammer to a distance of 62m.
Like Jackie, Sia also harbors a dream to erase the 58.52m national record set by fellow Sarawakian Wong Tee Kui in 1993.
