BANGKOK: Thailand and Myanmar agreed on amending and developing laws and relevant regulations to further boost their border trade, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Surapong Tovichakchaikul, told journalists that Prime Minister and Defence Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, discussed the issue with visiting Myanmar Parliament President and House Speaker, Thura U Shwe Mann at the Government House.

Surapong noted that both leaders discussed the possibility of amending laws and regulations on border trade to facilitate their cross-border cargo transport after the Asean Community (AC) is formed by 2015.

TNA said that the move will also meet Thailand's target on increasing the value of border trade with Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Malaysia by 20 per cent annually to exceed one trillion baht (RM102.5 billion) per annum, from about 900 billion baht (RM92.27 billion) yearly now.

According to Surapong, the Myanmar Parliament President, who is paying an official visit to Thailand from September 22-26, was also gratified for Thailand's good care of Myanmar workers and extension of their registrations for work in the Thai economy for another year.

The speaker confirmed that Myanmar workers are happy with the daily minimum wage of 300 baht (RM30.79) in Thailand and he does not expect any shortage of Myanmar labour for Thailand, as the Myanmar population now stand at 80 million.

He also praised Thailand's development, from which Myanmar wants to take lessons. — Bernama
