HOHENWALD — On Sept. 12, 2000, the seventh resident of The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee arrived. Her name was "Winkie," and this was the final stop on a journey that began many years ago with her capture in Burma. Before relocating to The Sanctuary, Winkie was a star attraction at the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wis. Her journey from birth to The Sanctuary is a fascinating story.
The staff and volunteers at the Welcome Center invite the public to stop by to learn more about the resident elephants through videos and slide presentations. A photo exhibit featuring the Sanctuary residents is currently on display.
While at the Welcome Center, visitors may also access the network of 13 cameras which are strategically placed throughout all three habitats, and enjoy live streaming video of the elephants in their natural environment without intruding on their sanctuary.
The Welcome Center, located on Main Street in downtown Hohenwald, will present a multi-media presentation and informal discussion titled "Winkie's Journey" at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Welcome Center is open to the public from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursdays-Fridays and every third Saturday of the month; other times are available by appointment.
