MP submits to abolish Section 18 of peaceful assembly and procession law

MP submits to abolish Section 18 of peaceful assembly and procession law

MP Thura U Aung Ko said he will submit the Section 18 in order to abolish the laws to the Parliament on 1 November.

"I'm going to submit the matter to the parliament in coming week to put an end to the law. According to the National Constitution, the original rights for each citizen have already given. Section 18 goes against the fundamental right to hold peaceful assembly enshrined in the 2008 Constitution.  In order to totally eliminate the law, I'm going to present it to the Parliament," said Thura U Aung Ko.

The Section 18 states of the controversial Peaceful Assembly and Procession Law prohibits protests without prior permission from authorities.

"Due to that Section 18, a lot of people are sentenced for jail. President Thein Sein also pledged that by the end of 2013, there will be no more prisoners of conscience not only to Myanmar but also to the world. That's why I'm going to submit the matter to the parliament to abolish it," he added.

In the draft of amending the peaceful assembly and procession law, there will be 23 amendments.
