Gomez bags chess bronze at SEA Games

MANILA, Philippines – Grand Master (GM) John Paul Gomez won a bronze medal for the Philippines in the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.

Gomez settled for a truce with Singaporean International Master (IM) Go Weiming in the final round to score 5.0 points in seven outings and capture the bronze.

Vietnamese GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son halved the point with Indonesian GM Susanto Megaranto to claim the gold medal with 6.0 points.

Another Vietnamese GM, Nguyen Duc Hoa, edged Filipino GM Oliver Barbosa to capture the silver medal with 5.5 points.

Gomez earlier won the silver medal in the individual chess 960 rapid event, also known as Fischer Random Chess, which was topped by Megaranto.

Meanwhile, GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. won a bronze medal in the men's individual blitz chess competition. -- By Marlon Bernardino
