Henry Dagmil reclaimed his supremacy in the region by copping the men's long jump of the 2013 Southeast Asian Games on Sunday in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
Dagmil ended a six-year wait as he won the gold with a leap of 7.80 meters, to beat defending titlist Supanara Sukhasvasti Na Ayudhaya of Thailand, who tallied 7.71 meters. Van Lam Pham of Vietnam wound up in third place with a jump of 7.53 meters.
It was an auspicious debut for the athletics team, which is looking for a strong showing in this SEA Games with the entry of new recruits and Fil-foreign talents.
Dagmil, who turned 33 on December 7, last won the gold medal in the 2007 edition in Nakhon Ratchasima, but was beaten by Ayudhaya in the last two editions.
"Prospect ko makuha ang ginto before ako mag-retire," Dagmil earlier said. "Pinag-iisipan ko na kasi kaya ko pa naman kasi o yung katawan naitn medyo maselan na din."
Later in the day, the tandem of Archand Christian Bagsit and Edgardo Alejan notched an incredible gold-silver medal finish in the men's 400m run.
The 22-year-old Bagsit bucked a slow start to win the race in 47.22 seconds, beating out Alejan finished (47.45) for his first gold medal in the regional competition.
"Maganda ang pacing ko. Hindi ako sumabay sa field," he said.
Capping a productive day for the Philippine track and field team was the silver medal of Arnel Ferrera in men's hammer throw and the bronze medal of Riezel Buenaventura in women's pole vault. - Reuben Terrado, SPIN
