Luxury river cruise to sail Myanmar waters next year
A luxury river cruise set to sail the waters of Myanmar next year will include excursions to the country's pagodas and temples. - AFP/Relaxnews pic, December 10, 2013.In yet another sign that Myanmar is generating major interest as a travel destination, a luxury all-suite ship is set to sail the mysterious waters of the once-reclusive country next year.
Custom-built by local Burmese craftsmen, the Sanctuary Ananda will sail the Ayeyarwady and Chindwin rivers with guided excursions into temples, pagodas, monasteries and ancient towns along the way.
The ship, which will make its maiden voyage in December 2014, will house both indoor and al fresco restaurants, a spa, gym, library, outdoor plunge pool, and 21 suites equipped with balconies and air conditioning.
Onboard activities will include lectures, traditional Burmese cooking lessons as well as yoga and meditation classes.
Now that the Southeast Asian country has emerged from a travel boycott, Myanmar has become a place of interest for intrepid and adventure-seeking tourists.
In 2012, a record 1,060,000 tourists entered Myanmar, up from 800,000 the year before.
Myanmar's growth as a travel destination has also attracted major commercial airlines like Etihad and Qantas which now fly into Yangon.
