Oman thrash Myanmar in ACC Challenge Cup in Bangkok



MUSCAT — Oman got off to a thundering start in the U-19 ACC Challenge Cup tournament in Bangkok, Thailand yesterday. In their opening match Oman mauled a hapless Myanmar by a huge margin of 254 runs at Terdthai Stadium in Bangkok, according to reports received here. Put in to bat, Oman collected runs at brisk pace with openers Jathin Varijakshan and Muntazir Zaidi driving the ball well put on 132 runs partnership before Jathin exited after making 51 (1×6, 5×4). Muntazir followed suit after a well made 56 (6×4). However Gayash Dias took over from where the openers had left and remained unbeaten on 64 (5×4) while a confident Wasim Ali made a quick-fire 17 runs. Syed Taha joined Gayash and made 53 off 46 balls (4×6, 4×4 ) and the pair put on 103 runs. Waseem Ismail al Balushi joined Gayash and in the 50th over he hit two consecutive sixes to score 15 runs from 7 balls and help set a target of 321.


Chasing the mammoth total Myanmar were completely outplayed by Oman with some brilliant fielding by Ibrahim al Harthy and Shreyas, and were bundled out for 67 in 27.3 overs. Gayash took two wickets for three runs in 6 overs while Shuaib al Balushi and Shreyas Malhotra bagged two wickets apiece for 10 and 11 runs repectively. Gayash was named man of the match. Oman will meet Maldives in the next match on December 10. Brief scores: Oman 321 for 6 in 50 overs (Jathin 51, Muntazir Zaidi 56, Gayash Dias 64 n.o., Syed Taha Hassan 53) beat Myanmar 67 all out in 27.3 overs (Gayash Dias 2/6, Hemil Ganatra 1/11, Shuaib al Balushi 2/10, Shreyas Malhotra 2/11).
