SINGAPORE: Acting Culture, Community and Youth Minister Lawrence Wong on Wednesday night attended the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) opening ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
Mr Wong, together with some 30,000 spectators, was treated to a visual and musical feast at the Wunna Theikdi Stadium.
He said: "Myanmar put in a lot of effort to get a grand show and I think it truly lived up to all the expectations. You could see the high spirits of the performers and the athletes, and the performers in particular put in a lot of effort. You could see they had gone through many rounds of practice. And the whole stadium was behind them."
Mr Wong was speaking after watching Team Singapore's shuttler, Chen Jia Yuan, in the badminton women's quarterfinals.
Chen, who has a history of asthma, took a medical timeout against her Vietnamese opponent after suffering from breathing difficulties.
She eventually lost the match -- 19-21, 21-18, 17-21.
Mr Wong said: "Kudos to her (Chen) for all the effort that she had put in into the fight. I've been doing my best to encourage them (Team Singapore athletes), to give them full support, and to tell them to do their best to do Singapore proud. They should, first of all, try to win and even if they can't win, be brave in the attempt."
