SEA GAMES: Two Bronzes For Lifters

/The StarYANGON: After three days and seven unsuccessful attempts to win a medal at the Thein Phyu Indoor Arena in Yangon, the Malaysian weightlifters finally got it right in the only two events on the final day of competition on Monday.
Mohd Faiz Musa overcame hosts Myanmar's determination to prevent him from getting on the podium to win the men's 94kg bronze.
Nor Khasida Abdul Halim then bagged the bronze in the women's 69kg, an event which featured only three competitors.
The 24-year-old Mohd Faiz was involved in a close tussle with Myanmar's Saw Aung Naing in the battle for the bronze.
Both lifters cleared 135kg in the snatch, with Faiz lifting 172kg in his second attempt in the clean and jerk. Aung Naing was initially shown the red flag by two of the three judges after his legs wobbled while lifting 172kg in his third and final attempt.
But the jury overturned the decision, allowing the Myanmar lifter to occupy third spot due to his lighter body weight than Faiz.
The Malaysian, however, shut out the din from the home crowd to lift 173kg and secure a 308kg total, 1kg more than Aung Naing, for the bronze.
"This is a hard-earned medal because it was not easy to beat the Myanmar competitor on his home ground," said Faiz.
"Not only did the jury reinstate his (Aung Naing's) failed attempt, the electricity in the athletes' room was cut off during warm-up. It came on just before the start but since I was the first to go into action, the heat made me a little tired and dizzy."
The gold was won by Thailand's Sarat Sumpradit with a total of 352kg, while Vietnam's Hoa Tran Van took the silver on 345kg.
In the women's 69kg, Nor Khasida played it safe by opening with a comfortable 75kg (snatch) and 95kg (clean and jerk) weights to ensure she put points on the board in the three-member competition.
The 23-year-old SEA Games debutant went on to finish with a 188kg total (83kg in snatch and 105kg in clean and jerk), 2kg more than her previous personal best.
However, the Malaysian failed to trouble either gold medal winner Boonatee Klkasikit (225kg) or second placed Lae Lae Win of Myanmar (206kg).
"Although there were only three contestants, I am proud of my achievement to better my personal best and add a bronze for the Malaysian weightlifting squad," said Nor Khasida.
