YANGON - National League for Democracy chairperson, Aung San Suu Kyi has had minor surgery on both feet yesterday morning, according to her family doctor.
Dr Tin Myo Win, her family doctor and member of NLD Health Network, said Suu Kyi was suffering from bunions, an enlargement of bone or tissue around the joint of the big toe on both feet, and underwent surgery for one and a half hours at the Asia Royal Hospital.
"Chloroform was not used. Only anaesthetic was during the surgery. She didn't feel any pain after the surgery. Everything is well. She will need to rest for a few days. She underwent the surgery because her feet hurt whenever she walked. There's not harm to her life," said Dr Tin Myo Win.
The NLD leader is currently receiving medical treatment at the Asia Royal Hospital and the surgeons will decide when she will be allowed to be discharged from the hospital, according to her family doctor.
He said that Suu Kyi has 'a clean bill of health' when she had a medical checkup before undergoing the surgery.
According to Dr Tin Myo Win, this was the second time the opposition leader underwent a surgery after a major surgery in 2003.
"Some people urged her to seek medical treatments abroad, but she refused. She said she will only receive the treatments from the local doctors and hospitals," he added.
