KALAY—Local people from the town of Tamu, in Myanmar's northwestern region of Sagaing, yesterday took to the streets in protest against India's alleged encroachment upon Myanmar's territory, reports say.

The protest was organised by the Tamu Youth Network and the Upper Chindwin Youth Network.
Yin Ko Oo from the Tamu Youth Network said the protesters would continue to issue their demands during the protest at the Indian Embassy.

"At about 9 a.m. today, we started going in procession from Nan Phalon Junction. When we arrived at the boundary line, we raised our placards and signboards showing our demands. We then went to the India-Myanmar Friendship Road and ended our procession with a signboard erected in downtown Tamu saying, 'Kabaw Valley Region'. We sang the national anthem. We will inform the Indian Embassy of our protest and issue our demands. The local authorities gave us security assistance," said Yin Ko Oo.

According to local residents, the Indian government is encroaching on Myanmar's territory. The demonstration was aimed at ensuring a fair and just demarcation.

One local, Aung Thu Chan, said the boundary dispute had dragged on for a long time and that previous governments had failed to handle the case properly.

"We are not trying to cause hatred between the two countries. But we don't accept any encroachment. We need justice in this boundary issue," said the local.

More than 2,000 residents took part in the protest, which lasted for two and a half hours.
