Wei Feng Fired Up To Fight For Malaysia

/The StarNAYPYITAW: IT took 12 long hours to reach Naypyitaw but for men's singles shuttler Chong Wei Feng it just did not matter.
He was just excited to be involved in his first SEA Games and is all pumped up in Myanmar.
In fact, the 26-year-old is on a mission and is he is determined to achieve just that – to end the country's 12-year wait for a SEA Games gold in the men's singles event.
Malaysia last tasted success at the 2001 SEA Games through Mohd Roslin Hashim but since then, Indonesia have dominated the scene in every series after that.
Wei Feng said that it was time to seize the moment: "We left Kuala Lumpur at 4am (on Saturday) and transit in Bangkok. When we reached Naypyitaw, it was already getting dark.
"Today, we tested the competition venue (Wunna Theikdi Inddor Stadium C) but we did not let the tiredness get to us," said Wei Feng.
"The people are friendly here and some can even speak our language. I am just so excited playing in my first Games – finally, I have been given the mandate to play for the country in the SEA Games and it is time to deliver.
"I have challenged myself to break barriers here. It has been some time since Malaysia won the men's singles gold medal and I hope to be the one to end that wait. This alone is good enough motivation for me," he said.
Wei Feng, however, have a few hurdles to clear in Myanmar in the likes of World Championships bronze medallist Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam, Thailand's Tanongsak Saensonboonsuk and Indonesia's Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka.
"They can easily beat me if I do not play up to my standard. There is no room for mistakes if I harbour to become a champion here," he said.
Besides Wei Feng, the other Malaysian representative in the men's singles is Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin.
The others in the team are Goh V Shem-Teo Kok Siang, Ow Yao Han-Lim Khim Wah, Yang Li Lian, Lim Chiew Sien, Ong Jian Guo-Lim Yin Loo, Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing, Yin Loo-Lee Meng Yean and Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo.
The draw for all the five badminton events will be carried out today and the first round of the competition will start tomorrow.
Without Lee Chong Wei, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying in the SEA Games squad, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have set a one gold medal target in Myanmar.
Chong Wei, Kien Keat-Boon Heong and Peng Soon-Liu Ying will be competing in the BWF World Super Series Finals on Wednesday at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton (KLBA) Stadium in Cheras.
