Local infrastructural development investors expressed concerns over
restriction of high-rise buildings in six downtown townships of the
commercial city Yangon on grounds of possible damages to colonial
buildings, according to local newspaper Pyi Myanmar report.

According to the report, the Yangon City Development Committee is
about to announce the directive to require developers to build
less-than-12-storey buildings around the colonial buildings.

It would mean loss to both land owners and contractors who have
already planned high-rise buildings in the areas.

"According to YCDC, the building with less stories would be allowed
when the construction of a high-rise building near the old secretariat
office," an contractor told Pyi Myanmar on condition of anonymity.

Dr Thant Myint Oo, chairman of Yangon Heritage Trust which is
overseeing the colonial buildings in Yangon, has said the high-rise
building could be developed alongside the ancient buildings in an
interview with Pyi Myanmar.
