Burma announced an amnesty for what it claims are the country's only remaining
political prisoners yesterday, in a last-minute effort to keep a promise
made by President Thein Sein on a visit to Britain last summer.
Five prisoners were freed from the notorious Insein Prison in Rangoon and more
releases are promised. The Government also said that investigations and
charges would be dropped for a range of offences that have been used over
the years to victimise opponents of the former military regime. These
include laws against treason, sedition, subversion, unlawful gatherings and
"harming public interests".
