Myanmar's National Human Rights Commission has said that existing laws are barriers to building a democratic state and must be amended.
Amending or rewriting current laws must be done without disturbing peace and stability, the commission added. They also expressed satisfaction the presidential promise to free all political prisoners by the end of 2013.
"We are worth democracy. Please delete the sections that bar us from getting human rights. We've been protesting for 25 years. That means we are still under oppression," said Min Ko Naing from the 88 Peace and Open Society.
The committee urged ex-political prisoners to take part in building a democratic state and the process of national unity.
Likewise, the 88 Peace and Open Society has expressed to delete sections in the current penal code which charge and punish the political and human rights activists.
