Lighted holiday star will return to Burma Avenue

Campbell County Memorial Hospital trustees gave the city of Gillette's Parks and Beautification Board permission to use a quarter of an acre of hospital land near Burma Avenue to relocate a large, decorative star.

The star has been on Southern Drive near the water tank since it had to be moved from its original location near the hospital to make room for the construction of the Burma Overpass.

With the overpass complete, the Parks and Beautification Board would like to move the star back to its rightful place.

Norm Curtis, vice chairman of the city board, told hospital trustees Thursday that he finds the location off Burma Avenue near the Sixth Street intersection to be inspirational.

"The view from the west on the interstate with travelers coming through is excellent. The line of sight from the east going the other way is excellent. Our local citizens will enjoy the beauty of it," Curtis said.

Trustee Nancy Tarver agreed.

"It's sentimental to me. I can remember when the star was there and I could see it when I was coming in from the north," she said.

Trustees gave the board the go-ahead to move forward with moving the star, as long as the city pays for all of the moving expenses.

There's one other stipulation: If for some reason the hospital wants to expand onto that property, the star would have to move again.

"If we ever did want to develop that property, we would have the right to do that and recapture that," CEO Andy Fitzgerald said.

The star generally is only on display during the holidays, but Curtis would like to see it up November-March each year.

"We'll encourage that the star once again be all white. It will just be a thing of beauty, an uplifting thing for our community," he said. "Possibly, we can be thought of as the city with the star, as it's so prominent"

With the trustees' approval, it's now up to the city to move the star. Curtis did not know how long the process would take.
