After attempted murder, Bukit Aman keeps eye on Myanmar

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police are also working closely with Interpol and the Chiefs of Asean Police (Aseanapol) to prevent the dispute between Buddhists and Muslims in Myanmar from spilling into Malaysia.

"There are quite a number of Myanmar nationals in our country and we do not want any issues there to escalate here," he said.

"That is why we are closely monitoring the situation."

Khalid said the police do not encourage politicians to hold their  meetings here given the circumstances in their homeland.

"However Malaysia is a free country and as long as they have valid documents, we can't bar them from entering," he said.

"We can only prevent them from entering if we have a valid reason."

Last week, five Myanmar nationals, consisting of political party leaders and activists, including Aye Maung, escaped death when two men on a motorcycle fired several shots in their direction in Jalan Alor, Bukit Bintang.

The group was understood to be here for a private meeting.

They had just left Plaza Low Yat when the shots were fired at 11.30pm.

A night earlier, a political activist was found dead inside a car boot in Ampang with stab wounds to his neck and head.

A passer-by who saw a Nissan Sunny parked by the roadside suspected something was amiss when he saw bloodstains on the vehicle.

He  alerted the police who found the body in the boot.

Police are still reviewing the CCTV footage of the incident to see if they can identify the shooters, with assistance from the Myanmar embassy.

Last week, sources also told The Malay Mail that Aye Maung was believed to be a target because of the manner in which he handled the ethnic riots in the state of Rakhine.

Aye Maung was chairman of a commission set up by the Myanmar government to investigate reports of the long stand-off between the Buddhist and Muslim communities in Rakhine and Yangon.

Investigations by a special team found the attempted murder of Aye Maung and the murder of the political activist in Ampang may have been committed by the same persons.
