Myanmar government is planning to reduce taxes on imported cars in
coming fiscal year to further cut the automobile prices in the
country, according to the government-run media.
According to the New Light of Myanmar, current car prices have been
reduced to one-fifth of those in the past, the New Light of Myanmar
said.
The number of imported cars exceeds two million, causing heavy traffic
jams in Yangon.
Automobiles are luxury in the past due to the extremely high prices
due to strict rules on imported cars in the past.
The government has introduced the scheme to substitute old private
vehicles with new cars since September 2011, cutting the then
skyrocketed automobile prices.
Myanmar has more than four million automobiles registered in the
government's transportation directorate.
