Richmond Hill Liberal
If you see a vehicle bearing red licence plates driving around Richmond Hill, it could be that of Bryon Wilfert, who has a new diplomatic appointment.
The Hon. Mr. Wilfert, former Liberal MP for Richmond Hill, has been appointed honourary consul for Canada to the Republic of Myanmar, formerly called Burma.
Mr. Wilfert, who held various positions in Parliament including Asia/Pacific and foreign affairs critic for the Liberal Party, has had a long association with Asia and has interacted with various members of the Myanmar government and society over the years.
"I am honoured to take on the role of honorary consul," Mr. Wilfert said this week. "Myanmar has undergone positive and significant political change over the last two years and this is leading to rapid social and economic change. It is an important time for Canada to engage in investment opportunities and democratic development," he said.
Mr. Wilfert will continue to live in Richmond Hill, but spend a lot of time in Ottawa, as he has been doing in recent years as a consultant.
"I will work with the Myanmar Embassy in Ottawa, as well as promote business and educational linkages in the GTA," he explained.
He will help promote economic investment, educational ties and tourism between the two countries.
Myanmar is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia bordered by Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand.
His consulting office of Wilfert Associates is in Markham; call 905-415-4552 or email b.wilfert@rogers.com
