Nippon Foundation to distribute 30,000 medicine boxes to Myanmar's villages

Ministry of health is currently negotiating with Japan-based Nippon Foundation for the distribution of more than 30,000 emergency traditional medicine boxes in rural areas this year, according to a statement released on April 25 by the foundation.

The statement also said that it's part of development cooperation with the ministry covering four sectors for social development programs in the country.

"We suggested to the government whether it is good to distribute such boxes to promote Myanmar's healthcare sector. The government initially agreed to do so after it sent experts to observe such programs carried out abroad. So there will be about 60,000 such boxes to distribute to all rural villages and we are negotiating with the ministry to distribute a total of 30,000 boxes this year," said Mr. Shuichi Ohno, an executive director from the foundation.

The boxes will contain seven types of traditional medicines and basic medical kits produced by the ministry-owned factories.

The distribution of the boxes worth US$ 12 each commenced in 2009. The distribution reached more than 15,000 villages in that year. It was subsequently suspended, however.

Now the ongoing negotiations will aim to resume the distribution this year with the target of reaching all of the country's 50,000 villages within two years.
