Ukhrul, April 15 2014:
In an attempt to foster better ties and solidify the bond of brotherhood among the Tangkhuls of Manipur and Myanmar's Somrah tract, the 2nd Cultural Exchange cum Sports Meet and fellowship was held at New Tusom village in Chingai block of Ukhrul district.
The three-day long event which concluded yesterday was marked by display of traditional shows, a Sepak Takraw exhibition match, folk dances presentation, live performance of artists from the Myanmar delegates and fellowship services.
The delegates mutually pledged their commitment to work for the setting up of a Border Haat at Tusom village in order to boost trade relation and healthy economic growth of the people residing in the area.

More than a hundred youths from both sides took part in daily evening fellowship services.
The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the apex body of the tribe has also accepted that people settling in Somrah tract of the neighbouring Myanmar and Tangkhuls of India are one and are culturally connected.
TNL is in the process of admitting Somrah people's representative into the Tangkhuls' apex body shortly after their due consent.
Thanks to the initiative of Tangkhul people, Tusom village in India and Somrah Khullen in Myanmar are linked by a dilapidated road.
A metalled road and few Govt establishments including schools and health care centres are present though within the Somrah region.
The Myanmar Govt is understood to have proposed developing the 18 kms road that links Somrah and border pillar no 129 as its priority development programme for the border villages to facilitate better trade relation with India.
Trade between villagers of the two countries on construction materials, heavy vehicles and daily household items like salt, sugar, oil etc are done at Tusom village on daily basis.
The folk dance performed by artists from Somrah has close similarity with Manipuri dance, Thabal Chongba.
TNL President Artax A Shimray in his speech during the valediction function yesterday urged the people to uphold the cordial relations between the two countries, to value the ties and bonhomie despite many problems.
