Topeka WWII Pilot Finally Returns To Kansas

FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (WIBW)-- The Patriot Guard lined the roadway for a Topeka pilot who lost his life in the skies over Burma during World War II. Verne L. Gibb was reportedly piloting a routine flight from Burma to India when the plane disappeared almost 70 years ago.

Remains were given to a priest by a Burmese national and turned over to an American teacher in 2002. A DNA match with Gibb's sister provided final identification for Lt. Gibb.

Bill Owensby, Department of Veterans Affairs said that Ft. Leavenworth is considered a closed cemetary, but because Gibb was listed as Killed In Action, he could still be buried there.
