MPC welcomes Laiza statement

U Hla Maung Shwe, special advisor to the Myanmar Peace Center, a quasi-governmental organization established in 2012, has welcomed the statement issued by the week-long Laiza summit held by 18 armed movements yesterday.

"It is a step forward in the right direction," he said. "The outcome looks to be even better than we had dared to hope for. It ensures that the peace process will be moving further forward."

According to the statement, the conference in Laiza, the Kachin Independence Organization's strong hold on the Sino-Burmese border, had laid down a 10 point guideline for the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT) to negotiate with the government's Union Peacemaking Work Committee (UPWC).

Though no details of the guideline was made public, the statement concluded with a promise to build "a genuine federal union based on democracy, racial equality and self determination."

President Thein Sein had earlier reportedly told the MPC that his aim was "to form a union based on democracy, federalism and the outcome of the political dialogue".
