MPT to take action against dealers if they break agreements

Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) will take action against its SIM card dealers if they force sales of Ks 1,500 SIM cards, handsets or top-up cards, sources from MPT say.

MPT has assigned 13 companies and shops to sell its SIM cards. More than 30 companies applied for wholesale dealer status from MPT but the group will check up on them before allowing them to go ahead.

An official from the economic department, under the MPT joint-venture with KDDI and Sumitomo, said: "We told them that we are trying to stop the black market [in SIM cards]. We will give a first warning to [dealers] and the next time we find out they are selling the SIM cards along with handsets and top-up cards, we will stop selling SIM cards to them. They will have to take responsibility for the shops which they sold SIM cards to. The black market will slowly disappear if we do it like this. We are still scrutinising the list of companies who applied to be dealers."

MPT is continuing to sell Ks 1,500 SIM cards, while the SIM cards price in the black market currently ranges from Ks 15,000 and Ks 20,000.

Elite Tech, ABC, Asia Mega Link, Myanmar Pitaut, Tarmoe Nyae Chan Thar, and Fortune and other companies are selling the SIM cards.
