Political, business leaders urged to focus on sustaining reform in Myanmar

Myanmar President U Thein Sein Monday urged political and business leaders in the country to look beyond merely agreeing or disagreeing with the government's efforts and to focus on sustaining the momentum of the reform process.

U Thein Sein made the call in his regular monthly radio speech to the nation.

Examining the current reform process, he said Myanmar is undeniably on the right path and moving in the appropriate direction.

"All of us doing our part for the success of the reform process through commitment to nurturing moderation and a new political culture are acting with political goodwill for the benefit of the nation," he said.

He acknowledged different viewpoints by people over the way the government overcome challenges and difficulties in good or bad light.

He pointed out that peace-making groups of the government and the ethnic armed groups have completed their third draft of nationwide ceasefire agreement in August and only a few issues remain to be dealt with for the formal signing of the nationwide truce and enter into political dialogue.

He urged political leaders, army leaders, ethnic leaders and national people to ensure a better today and the future by continuing their action through practical political means.

Myanmar has made important progress in a just-ended fifth round of nationwide ceasefire talks between the government and the ethnic armed groups in Yangon from Aug. 15 to 17, overcoming many conflict issues to reach many consensus and moving towards finalization of the draft nationwide ceasefire accord.

The two sides agreed to continue talks in September on some five remaining points out of 122 of the draft ceasefire accord and it is expected that the nationwide ceasefire accord could be signed in October.
