SEA Games: Singapore avoid Malaysia

Singapore have received a favourable draw as they look to win the SEA Games football gold for the first time.

Host nation Singapore have avoided arch rivals Malaysia after the draw for the football competition for the 2015 Southeast Asian Games was held on Wednesday.

Aide Iskandar's side will face Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia and Philippines in Group A of the competition, which begins on May 29.

Group B sees Malaysia pitted against defending champions Thailand, as well as the likes of Vietnam, Brunei, Laos and Timor Leste.

The favourable draw means that Singapore fans will again see their side face Myanmar, the nation whose senior team are coached by former Lions' boss Raddy Avramovic. Their clash in the 2014 Suzuki Cup ended in a 4-2 victory for Singapore at the National Stadium on Nov. 26.

Singapore have never won the football gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games, which will feature more than 7,000 athletes and officials across 36 sports in the Republic's Golden Jubilee year.

Coach Aide Iskandar will have first priority over Singapore's best young players, despite two World Cup qualifiers clashing with the SEA Games.

The nation is hosting the multi-sports festival for the first time since 1993.

The football tournament -- for U23 teams -- begins a week before the rest of the Games. It clashes with the first two matches of Singapore's World Cup qualifying campaign which means that senior coach Bernd Stange could be without several top players.

Singapore took the bronze medal in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games football tournament in Myanmar which saw Thailand defeat Indonesia 1-0 in the final.
