Myingyan tornado wreaks havoc on buildings


A tornado that touched down in a village in Mandalay Division on 17 May caused extensive to buildings, according to locals.


Around 60 homes in Shwebontha village in Myingyan had their roofs blow off, while the Buddhist monastery and local schools were also damaged, Kyaw San Lwin, a resident, told DVB.


"The tornado hit the village from 4pm to 8pm on Sunday, knocking down six homes and ripping off the roofs of 60 others. Of the six homes totally destroyed, two were two-storey buildings and four were one-storey," said Kyaw San Lwin.

"Many houses in the village were left with no roofs, the stupa at the monastery had its crown bent, and two schools were also partially damaged. The zinc roofing from those buildings was blown off and landed about three furlongs [0.6 kilometres] away."


Some villagers suffered livestock losses in the storm, said Kyaw San Lwin.


No human casualties have been reported.


The residents who lost their homes are currently taking shelter in fellow villagers' houses. There are around 110 buildings in the village in total.


Myingyan Township's government administrator and other officials on Monday visited the residents, instructing them to submit a damage report.
