Enlarge The U.S. Treasury Department said Tuesday it has designated a Myanmar general as subject to sanction measures in connection with his role in illicit trades in arms from North Korea to his country.
The department said the action does not target the Myanmar government. Lt. Gen. Thein Htay, who heads Myanmar's Directorate of Defense Industries, is involved in the trade of North Korean arms, the Treasury Department said.
The general is prohibited from financial transactions with U.S. businesses and individuals. Any assets he may have in the United States are frozen, according to the department.
"Thein Htay has disregarded international requirements to stop purchasing military goods from North Korea, the revenues from which directly support North Korea's illicit activities," David Cohen, undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said in a statement.
In November Myanmar announced its intention to abide by U.N. Security Council resolution 1874, imposed on North Korea in the aftermath of its May 2009 nuclear test. It prohibits other countries from procuring military goods and assistance from Pyongyang.
