President Thein Sein discusses peace process with Elders

President Thein Sein met with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and two other members of The Elders on Wednesday in Nay Pyi Taw.
Jimmy Carter, 88, along with Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland, and Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, arrived in Myanmar for a three day visit aimed at supporting Myanmar's democratic transition and encouraging the government's peace efforts.
The president said that he was delighted to get help from the dignitaries regarding the peace process between the government and ethnic armed groups.
"We gained success but we also faced failures. Now nearly entire nation as well as most of the border areas is enjoying the fruits of ceasefire," said the President.
He added that the government is trying to sign a nationwide peace agreement and needs to hold political discussions with armed groups to reach a durable peace.
The Elders is an independent group of global leaders who work together for peace and human rights. They were founded in 2007 by Nelson Mandela, Former President of South Africa and Nobel Peace Laureate who along with Archbishop Desmond Tutu remain honorary Elders.
The organisation is currently chaired by Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General.
During their meeting with Thein Sein the Elders also discussed matters relating to amending the 2008 Constitution, peaceful co-existence between two ethnic groups, education, health and child care services in Rakhine State jointly organised between the United Nations and other NGOs as well as the release of all prisoners of conscience by the end of 2013.
The Elders also met with Tin Aye, Chairman of Union Election Commission in Nay Pyi Taw and discussed preparations for the 2015 general election, electoral system for the president, and for the government to allow foreign observers.
They also met with Nanda Kyawswa, deputy-speaker for the Lower House on matters concerning Myanmar's democratic transition, human rights and parliamentary affairs.
