SIBU: The national women's volleyball team are determined to make an impact at the 27th Myanmar SEA Games next month, after a lapse of 10 years.
The team took part in the 2nd Asian University Volleyball Championship in Mongolia in 2012 but failed to win any medal.
The same team, however, made amends in the Asean University Games in Laos this year by finishing third.
The national team are training at the Sibu Rejang Park Volleyball Court here, where they are hosted by the Sibu Volleyball Association.
The girls have been training under the watchful eye of chief coach Moh Ung Ming for the past four weeks.
Ung Ming said that the battle in Naypyitaw will be very tough but is optimistic his team can produce a good result.
"Of course we want to win a medal but Thailand are a world class team. They defeated Japan and China in the Asian Games," he said.
According to Ung Ming, who is also the Sibu Volleyball Association chairman, the other strong teams are Vietnam and Indonesia.
"The players must stay focused ... we are working very hard to improve the team in all aspects before the competition," he said.
Ung Ming lamented the short preparation period as the Malaysian Volleyball Association (Mava) only gave the Sibu Volleyball Association the green light to coordinate the team on Oct 3.
"However, this should be a good start for the team as the players are still young ... the average age is 19. We hope to do better in the next SEA Games," he said.
According to him, all expenses for the team's preparations are being borne by the Sibu Volleyball Association while the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) will only pay for the team's expenses during the SEA Games in Myanmar.
The contingent will leave for Naypyitaw on Dec 10.
The squad:
