Media agencies in Burma have threatened to boycott this year's Academy Awards on 29 December unless they're provided the same access to the show as state-run media outlets.
"If we are not allowed the same access to the event as the Ministry of Information, we have decided not to attend or cover it", said Myat Khine, chief editor of Snapshot News Journal.
Several media groups said they were disappointed with the press procedures announced by the Myanmar Film Association on 21 December.
"The Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprise said at the press conference that only media personnel from the Ministry of Information will be allowed onto the arena", said Myat Khine. "Other journalists are not allowed down there, which we find very unfair – it's inappropriate to do something like this these days".
However, the Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprise told DVB that all media personnel at the event will be allowed to report from media boxes and that no one will be granted access to the arena in front of the stage.

"We have arranged for all the media personnel attending the event to cover it", said Thein Htun Aung of the Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprise. "But unlike past years, no one will be allowed in the arena, the area where the awards will take place – neither the state media nor the private media. Instead they can cover the event from the media boxes set up for the reporters."
This year's Academy Awards will include all movies made in 2012. And as previous events, it will be hosted at the Thuwunna Stadium in Rangoon.
But for many in Burma's media, the drama has already begun.
