Government officials are involved in illicit drug trade in Tamu near the Myanmar-India border area, MP Khin Mway Lwin from Mingin Constituency said in a Parliament session held yesterday.
She [MP Khin Mway Lwin] raised the point during a hearing of the president message about the signing of border cooperation between Myanmar and India.
Beside illegal drugs, weapons smuggling and illegal exporting of forestry products, as well as illegal entering of Bengalis, take place on a regular basis in the area, the MP said.
"Illegal dealings of narcotic drugs in Moreh, an Indian town located near Tamu from Myanmar are alarming. About 20 homes are selling narcotic drugs openly in Moreh and locals and authorities knew about them. The border areas between Myanmar and India have no fence and illegal entry has happened all the time, according to locals. The government staffs from Myanmar are also involved in illegal dealings of narcotic drugs and they [the government staff] also went to opium dens to use," Khin Mway Lwin said.
She said she supports the mutual agreement because it can sort out the problems listed above and the border dispute problems.
In the agreement, there are included facts about to bring peace in border areas, to fight illegal possessing of weapons, dealing of narcotic drugs, human trafficking, and illicit trade, to implement mutual agreement with a joint cooperation of Myanmar and India army for border security issues, to exchange information in border areas, to patrol the border areas and to agree and respect the international boundary of Myanmar and India. The parliament approved the president message to sign the agreement.
