Myanmar to announce minimum wage by end of year

Myanmar to announce minimum wage by end of year

Myanmar's labour minister said the government would announce an official minimum wage for workers before the end of this year.

Minister of Labour Aye Myint, made the announcement at the first meeting of the national committee working for the minimum wage held on January 16.

"There are several conditions to consider in detail and may also be obstacles in the process. There may be differences depending on regions, job types and living costs. The official minimum wage should be the kind of win-win situation for both workers and employers," said the minister.

The committee is currently working on the wage, based on basic needs for workers and their families, current wages, their living standards, expenses and individual income.

The International Labour Organisation, a U.N. agency, is also working in cooperation with local research organisations to find out the number of workers in the country, their working hours and wages in regions such as Yangon, Mandalay and Bago.

Myanmar's parliament has enacted the minimum wage law last March and the government approved the related by-laws in July last year.
