The Singapore Cerebral Palsy football team routed their Southeast Asian counterparts in their debut appearance in the tournament
The Singapore Cerebral Palsy (CP) football team beat Thailand 5-1 in the opening game of the 7th ASEAN Para Games in Myanmar on Wednesday.
This is the Singapore team's first ever appearance in the games, and they couldn't have asked for a better start to the tournament.
Muhammad Shafiq Ariff scored the first two goals through two corner kicks, while Muhammad Shahidil Rastam scored a brace as well. Captain Khairul Anwar Kasmani scored Singapore's fifth goal with a shot from outside the penalty box.
Singapore team coach Mohamed Zainudeen was extremely proud of his boys for coming away with a resounding victory in their debut match in the tournament.
"It was a great start to the games," he told Goal Singapore.
"The boys were so hungry and played with so much enthusiasm and spirit. The lead up to the game day; players involvement and receptiveness to match instructions were commendable."
The format of the Para Games football is seven-a-side match, with a limit on the number of players from each disabled classification in the pitch and a team can have players from various classifications.
In the other group match, Myanmar beat Malaysia 4-3. Singapore will play Malaysia next, and according to coach "Zai", the boys are already looking forward to face the Causeway rivals.
