The United Nations hailed Myanmar's latest release of child soldiers from units of its armed forces, according to news.com.au.

The UN confirmed the discharge of 96 child soldiers and praised as a "historic step".

Myanmar's armed forces, known as 'Tatmadaw', and UN signed a pact on the issue in June in 2012.

The Myanmar army has already released 272 child soldiers from the military services over past 18 months.

It was "an historic step towards ending the recruitment and use of children by the Myanmar Armed Forces," said the United Nations in a statement.

Myanmar is reducing the minor recruitment to the army, but the figures of the number of child soldiers in the army is still unknown.

Bertrand Bainvel, UNICEF Myanmar representative, said the new release was "a strong commitment by the Myanmar Government and the Tatmadaw to end a practice".
