Siamese king's tomb excavation projects halted

MANDALAY—All projects related to the excavation of a Siamese King's tomb in Linzin Cemetery have been suspended after the Mandalay City Development Committee ordered all buildings within the excavation site to be taken down.
As the Mandalay regional government and the Ministry of Culture are still negotiating the construction of a memorial monument and historical park at the excavation site for the tomb of the ancient Siamese King Uthumphon, the Thai-Myanmar Friendship organisation needs to immediately take down all the buildings, according to the excavation team from the Myanmar side.
"It is true that the Siamese king's tomb excavation works have been suspended," said a member of the excavation team from the Myanmar side. "We can't clearly say whether this is temporary or permanent. We are following the orders given by the authorities."
The excavation works and the construction of the memorial monument and historical park resumed in early February but met with objections from local historians and residents concerned about damage to ancient religious buildings.
The excavation team originally planned to hold a ceremony on March 15 to enshrine relics in the pagoda and had invited Minebone Sayadaw, Thidagu Sayadaw, Myataung Sayadaw from Mandalay, and other monks from Amarapura to hold the ceremony.
