17th Thailand - Myanmar Meeting on Narcotics Control held in Chiang Mai today


CHIANG MAI, 17 December 2014 (NNT) - The 17th Thailand - Myanmar Bilateral Meeting on Narcotics Law Enforcement Cooperation has been officially opened at Imperial Mae Ping Hotel, Chiang Mai Province.


Mr.Permpong Chaovalit, Secretary General of the Narcotics Control Board (NCB), presided over the opening ceremony of the meeting. He said that the situation of drug trafficking both in Thailand and the whole region has rapidly changed during the past year, with most of methamphetamine pills, widely known as "Ice", smuggled into Thailand from its main source of production in the Golden Triangle.


Thus he emphasized that Myanmar's cooperation is essential for Thailand's success in the suppression of drug trafficking. He reiterated that such cooperation would also help the region achieve its goal of being "Drug Free ASEAN in 2015".


He added that Thailand has also drawn up a project to assist Myanmar in increasing her efficiency in drug suppression and control by providing the neighbouring country with equipment, vehicles, and financial support. The project is awaiting an approval from the Cabinet.


In the bilateral meeting on Narcotics Law Enforcement Cooperation today, both sides discussed and exchanged information on target drug traffickers and the prevention and suppression of narcotic spread. They also reported the results of drug suppression campaigns as well as activities to enhance mutual cooperation on law enforcement across the border.
