The family of a man who died after his car collided with a tipper truck in Kirby Cross have paid tribute to him.
Charles Mayes, of Frietuna Road, Kirby Cross, died at the scene of the crash on Frinton Road at 10.25pm on Friday.
Mr Mayes, 95, is survived by his daughter Norma, son Trevor, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Born in Charlton, London, in 1919 he began work as a salesman at Smithfield's meat market after leaving school.
He enlisted with the RAF just before the Second World War and served with 11 Squadron for six years, spending a lot of his time in Burma – earning him the Burma Star among other medals.
After the war he returned to Smithfield's as a salesman.
He married Irene and the couple had two children.
They moved to Kirby Cross shortly before retirement, having had a holiday caravan and beach hut in the area for many years, and Mr Mayes took the milk train up to work until he fully retired aged 75.
In a tribute his family said: "Charles, known as Chas or Charlie, was very proud of his military service and of the medals that he was awarded, which included the Burma star.
"He was very well known and well liked in the East End.
"Chas and Irene met Pat and Ken whilst walking their dogs and they all became friends.
"Sadly Pat lost her husband through cancer. Chas lost Irene also through cancer in 1998.
"Chas and Pat became companions, going on day trips and holidays together. They had just come back from Malta for Armistice Day and were looking forward to going to Bristol for Christmas.
"Chas was a very much loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was thought the world of. We will miss his stories and his lust for life.
"Although he was 95 he wasn't one to sit in his armchair with a blanket on his knees, he was always out and about talking to people and he was always proud of his appearance.
"He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him."
A Dagenham man, 46, arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been bailed pending further enquiries until March 13.
